   안녕하십니까.

  

   제가 2025년 ALB Korea Law Award를 시상하는 뜻깊은 자리에 함께할 수 있게 되어 매우 영광스럽게 생각합니다.

   오늘 이 행사는 우리 법조계가 한 해 동안 거둔 성취를 돌아보고, 법률시장을 선도하는 분들의 헌신과 열정을 기리는 자리입니다. 수상자분들을 비롯하여 이 자리에 계신 모든 분께 진심으로 축하의 인사를 드리고 아울러 경의를 표합니다.

 

   1. 저는 이 뜻깊은 자리에 서게 된 것을 계기로 이 시대의 법률가에게 요구되는 가장 중요한 덕목이 무엇일까 하고 생각해 보았습니다.

 

   전문적인 법률지식, 투철한 정의감, 사회적 약자에 대한 배려심, 지역사회에 대한 봉사정신 등이 먼저 떠올랐습니다. 물론 이것들은 법률가에게 요구되는 당연한 덕목입니다. 그런데 이들 모든 덕목의 기초가 되는 것이 있습니다. 바로 신뢰입니다.

 

   신뢰는 어느 분야를 막론하고 우리 사회 모든 구성원 사이에서 요구되는 덕목이지만, 법률가에게 있어서는 더욱 중요한 의미를 지닙니다.

   사회가 고도화되고 복잡해질수록 법률분쟁이 늘어나고, 그 분쟁을 올바르게 해결하기 위해서는 법률가의 역할이 필수적입니다. 그리고 그 올바른 해결을 위해서는 의뢰인들의 법률가에 대한 신뢰와 심판기관인 사법부에 대한 신뢰가 무엇보다도 중요합니다. 진정한 신뢰가 결여된 형식적인 해결은 사상누각에 불과합니다.

 

   그러면 그 신뢰는 어떻게 구축되는 것일까요?

 

   신뢰는 단순히 미사여구를 늘어놓는 것으로 쌓이는 것이 아닙니다. 법률가들에 대한 신뢰는 그들의 전문성과 헌신적인 노력 끝에 비로소 얻어지는 결실입니다.

   의뢰인들은 법률가에게 기적을 만들어 낼 것을 기대하지 않습니다. 그들은 법률가가 그들의 처한 상황을 정확히 이해하고, 법을 제대로 적용하여 최선을 다해 올바른 해결 방안을 찾아줄 것을 기대합니다. 법률가가 그런 모습을 보일 때 비로소 그들은 법률가를 신뢰하게 됩니다.

 

   한마디로 말해, 법률에 관한 전문성, 철저한 검토 후의 책임 있는 조언, 그리고 고객의 사정을 진심으로 이해하는 태도야말로 법률가가 의뢰인의 신뢰를 얻는 지름길이라고 할 것입니다. 그것은 동시에 훌륭한 법률가의 징표이기도 합니다.

  

   2. 한편, 나날이 복잡해져 가는 오늘날의 법률시장에서는 법률가들의 협력과 소통이 요구됩니다.

 

   사내 변호사와 로펌 변호사는 그 역할이 서로 다르지만, 추구하는 목표는 같습니다. 사내 변호사는 현장의 맥락과 실정을 가장 잘 이해하는 전문가로서, 로펌 변호사는 다양한 사건을 다루면서 축적한 폭넓은 경험과 법적 통찰을 바탕으로, 서로의 시각을 보완함으로써 복잡다기한 문제에 대한 정치한 해결책을 함께 찾아갑니다.

 

   나아가 로펌 변호사들 간에도 경쟁 속의 협력, 즉 서로의 지식과 경험을 공유하여 법률 수요자들에게 실질적인 가치를 제공하는 문화가 자리 잡을 때, 그들은 더욱 깊은 신뢰를 얻고, 사회의 발전에 한층 크게 기여하게 될 것입니다.

 

   결국 법률가의 가치와 위상은 개인의 전문성과 역량, 고객과 사회를 향한 헌신, 그리고 함께 성장하려는 협력의 정신이 합쳐질 때 더욱 높아질 것이며, 그럼으로써 법률가에 대한 사회의 신뢰도 깊어질 것입니다. 그런 의미에서 오늘의 수상은 단순한 성취의 결과가 아니라, 법률가가 사회에 어떤 의미를 남길 수 있는가에 대한 하나의 답이라고 생각합니다.

 

 

   3. 이와 관련하여 마지막으로 한 가지만 더 말씀드리겠습니다.

 

   민주주의 기본은 힘의 지배가 아닌 법의 지배, 즉 법치주의를 구현하는 것임은 더 말할 나위도 없습니다. 그런데 주지하듯이 지금은 세계의 도처에서 오로지 힘을 앞세운 강자의 논리 앞에 법치주의가 심각하게 위협을 받고 있습니다.

 

   이런 상황에서는 누구보다도 법률가의 역할이 중요합니다. 법률가는 무엇이 진정한 법인가를 밝히고. 그 법의 올바른 실행을 위하여 노력하여야 합니다. 단순히 “법률”이라는 가면을 쓴 데 불과한 형식적인 법이 아니라, 사회 공동체의 정의 관념에 부합하는 진정한 법의 구현을 위하여 힘을 기울여야 합니다.

 

    이번 시상이 여러분의 노력과 헌신을 기리는 자리가 됨과 동시에, 앞으로도 법률가들이 함께 성장하며 보다 나은 법률서비스를 제공하고 사회적 가치를 구현하는 계기가 되기를 바랍니다.

 

   4. 끝으로, 훌륭한 행사를 준비해 주신 Asian Legal Business 관계자 여러분과 오늘 이 자리에 함께하신 모든 분께 다시 한번 깊은 존경과 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

           Guest of Honor Remarks

   Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

 

   It is a great honor to join you tonight as the Guest of Honor at the ALB Korea Law Awards. This event provides a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the legal community over the past year and to recognize the dedication and passion of those who continue to lead the Korean legal market.  I extend my sincere congratulations and respect to everyone gathered here today.

 

   1. Standing here tonight, I found myself reflecting on what virtues are most essential for legal professionals in our time.

 

   Expert legal knowledge, a firm sense of justice, compassion for those who are in difficult situations, and a spirit of service to the community, all first came to my mind. These are, of course, indispensable virtue for any lawyer.

 

    But there is one virtue which is foundational to all of these: it is trust.

 

    Trust is a virtue required for all members of our society, regardless of field, but it holds even greater meaning for those in the legal profession. 

   As society becomes more advanced and complex, legal disputes increase, and the role of legal professionals becomes ever more essential in resolving disputes the right way.

   For the sound resolution of disputes, the trust that clients place in their legal counsels and the judiciary is the most critical. A purely formal resolution, without genuine trust, is nothing more than a house built on sand.

 

   So how is such trust built?

 

   Trust cannot be earned with eloquent words alone. Trust in legal professionals is the fruit earned only through deep expertise and dedicated hard work.

   Clients do not expect lawyers to perform miracles. What they do expect is that their lawyers will accurately understand their situation, properly apply the law, and strive to find the right solution. When lawyers demonstrate these qualities, clients come to trust them.

 

   In short, professional expertise, responsible advice based on careful analysis, and genuine understanding of the client’s circumstances are the surest paths to earning a client’s trust. These are also the hallmarks of an excellent lawyer.

 

   2. In today’s increasingly complex legal market, collaboration and communication among legal professionals are essential.

 

   While in-house counsels and law firm attorneys play different roles, their goals are the same. In-house counsels, as experts who best understand the context and realities on the ground, and law firm attorneys, with their broad experience and legal insight gained from diverse cases, can complement on another’s perspectives and work together to find effective solutions to multifaceted problems.

 

   Even among law firms, when a culture of “collaboration in competition” — where knowledge and experience are shared to deliver meaningful value to clients — takes hold, they will receive deeper trust from clients and contribute to the greater advancement of society as a whole.

 

   Ultimately, when lawyers can combine individual expertise and capability, dedication to clients and society, and a spirit of collaboration for mutual growth, the value and status of legal professionals will rise. This, in turn, will deepen society’s trust in legal professionals.

 

   In this sense, I believe today’s awards represent more than a celebration of individual accomplishments. They stand as an answer to the question of what meaningful legacy a lawyer can leave for society.

 

   3. Before I conclude, allow me to share one final thought.

 

   It goes without saying that the foundation of democracy is the rule of law, not the rule of force. Yet, as we all know, around the world today, the rule of law is under serious threat from the logic of might that seeks to place power above principle. .

  In these circumstances, the role of legal professionals is more crucial than ever. Lawyers must clarify what constitutes true law and strive for their proper implementation --- not as a mere formal exercise cloaked in legality, but as a genuine realization of justice in accordance with the moral conscience of our community.

 

   I hope that tonight’s ceremony will not only celebrate your hard work and dedication but also serve as an occasion to inspire legal professionals to grow together, provide better legal service, and realize greater social value through practice of law.

 

   4. Finally, I would like to express my deepest respect and gratitude to the organizers at ALB for organizing this wonderful event, and to everyone gathered here this evening.
